MECHANICAL FITTER.

Cammell Laird currently has vacancies within the Mechanical Fitting Department for experienced Fitters and is keen to receive applications.

The role will involve working closely with the Production Department to ensure an efficient working environment, maintain existing standards and work towards continuous improvements.

The applicant must be able to demonstrate:

  • Substantial knowledge of heavy mechanical maintenance & repair including workshop maintenance.
  • The individual must be able to understand and interpret technical specifications and drawings in order to achieve breakdown repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • The individual must be able to support other departments and communicate with subcontractors, suppliers and production departments to ensure that breakdowns & maintenance are completed in a correct and timely manner.
  • Must be able to work at height.
  • Must be able to work unsociable hours when required.

Qualifications required:

  • Level 3 NVQ or City & Guilds certificate, or recognised mechanical apprenticeship preferably in a heavy industrial environment.

The candidate should have extensive working knowledge of the procedures and processes undertaken in shipyards; knowledge of shipyard trade skills and their scope of work or for a similar heavy engineering environment.

PLATER.

The Plater will be responsible to meet the construction standards as required, using various techniques and on various materials in the construction and repair of structures.

Reporting directly to the Head of Steelwork, responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • To be dependable and responsible, (punctual and reliable)
  • Ability to fully understand requirements of following construction specification procedures.
  • Ability to fully understand job or task instructions
  • Ability to fully understand the drawing register, types and ranges of drawings.
  • Ability to fully understand storage, traceability and security category of drawings, and handle accordingly.
  • Ability to read and understand the various drawings and symbols as required.
  • Ability to select correct material and consider traceability, material type and thickness.
  • To consider at all times the most economical use of material.
  • Ability to select the correct method and tools to mark off accurately.
  • Ability to use the most appropriate cutting methods safely, thermal cutting (oxy-acetylene, plasma), cold cutting methods (guillotine, steel worker, cropper, angle grinder, nibbler).
  • Ability to use the most appropriate forming and shaping methods safely, (brake press, rollers, fly press, folding machine, angle rollers, pin block, hydraulic jacks).
  • Knowledge and understanding of safe lifting methods, rules, regulations including legislation requirements (LOLER)
  • The correct choice and safe use of appropriate lifting gear (strops, grabs, shoes, vacuum equipment, magnetic equipment)
  • Safe use of wall cranes, overhead cranes and chain blocks (certified).
  • Knowledge and understanding of manual handling techniques, Task, Individual, Load, Environment (TILE).
  • Knowledge and use of fairing aids, (pad eyes, lifting lugs, toggles, sliders, bridges, strong-backs, wedges, hydraulic jacks/ pulls, vacuum press, chain block, chain pulls, etc.)
  • Ability to produce templates for batch production or difficult shapes
  • Ability to make jigs for batch production or repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to cut and assemble component parts.
  • Ability to assemble units, modules, major constructions.
  • Ability to tack/ block weld, using MMA, FCAW (qualification as required)
  • Ability to safely remove temporary attachments as required and to specification.
  • Ability to prepare weld joints to specification prior to welding
  • Ability to use pattern development techniques, radial line, parallel line, triangulation as required.
  • The ability to fully understand hazards and risks associated with fabricating.
  • Follow all health and safety procedure, safe systems of work, approved codes of practice, etc.
  • Able to recognise the various equipment and tools required in fabrication.
  • Understand all pre-user checks and risk assessment prior to using tools and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain and care for tools and equipment in an appropriate manner.
  • Correctly select correct equipment and consumables for task.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific welding procedures to produce clean and sound weld, as required.
  • A clear understanding of all NDT processes, including MPI, DPI, X-Ray, Ultrasonic testing and how this relates to the welding process, particularly preparation prior to welding.
  • Ability to use thermal cutting equipment (oxy-acetylene/ plasma)- E
  • Ability to use cutting and gauging equipment (air-arc, gauging electrodes)- D
  • Accept that procedures, processes, materials, consumables and techniques may change. Positively and enthusiastically embrace any requirements for up skilling or re-training required by company, client or classification society.
  • Accept that it is the plater/ fabricators responsibility to maintain a standard that is required by; weld procedure, company requirements, client’s requirements and classification society requirements.

EXPERIENCE:

Skills and attributes that would benefit the applicant may include:

  • Be from an Engineering background or have equivalent or proven experience in a similar position.
  • Educated to Level 3 with indentures or similar vocational qualifications.
  • Experienced in, and understands, business processes associated with Shipyard operations.

WELDER.

The Welder will be responsible for a range of duties in the welding and fabricating of various materials.

Reporting directly to the Head of Steelwork, responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • All applicants must be able to provide evidence of right to work in the UK
  • Demonstrate full understanding of requirements in following weld specification procedures.
  • Demonstrate full understanding of requirements in identification, storage, care and use of all welding consumables.
  • Must be able to read and understand drawings.
  • Must be able to read and understand welding specification.
  • Will fully understand hazards and risks associated with welding.
  • Must follow all health and safety procedure, safe systems of work, approved codes of practice, etc.
  • Will be able to recognise the various equipment and tools required in welding.
  • Must understand all pre-user checks and risk assessment prior to welding.
  • Must be able to maintain and care for tools and equipment in an appropriate manner.
  • Must correctly select correct equipment and consumables for task.
  • Must be able to understand and follow specific welding procedures to produce clean and sound weld, as required.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of maintaining the integrity of the weld through cleaning process which may involve the use of handheld angle grinders.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of all NDT processes, including MPI, DPI, X-Ray, Ultrasonic testing and how this relates to the welding process, particularly preparation prior to inspection; it is the welder’s responsibility to prepare the weld prior to inspection.
  • Must be capable of welding in the following processes to required standards in all joint configurations, all positions, various materials as required:

Flux core arc welding – FCAW
Manual metal arc – MMA
Metal inert gas – MIG
Metal active gas – MAG
Tungsten inert gas – TIG
Submerged Arc
Fully Automatic i.e. MOGGY®

  • Must be able to use thermal cutting equipment (oxy-acetylene/ plasma)
  • Must be able to use cutting and gauging equipment (air-arc, gauging electrodes)
  • Will accept that procedures, processes, materials, consumables and techniques may change. Positively and enthusiastically embrace any requirements for up skilling or re-training required by company, client or classification society.
  • Will accept that it is the welders responsibility to maintain a standard of welding that is required by; weld procedure, company requirements, clients requirements, classification society requirements; for example ISO 9606, AWS D1.1, ASME IX
  • Will conduct all tasks with due regard to health and safety, statutory regulations and the correct use of relevant PPE.
  • Will comply with any reasonable request made by Management to meet the demands of the business.
